In the year 1811 a young Saxon soldier while on leave came upon a dark headed beauty outside a small town in southern Germany. She had dark hair pulled back and looked like a simple farm girl, although she looked Spanish rather than German. She looked as young as he was, just over 20 but she had the air of a mature woman. They talked until late in the night and inside a lone barn in a pasture, they made love. When the young blonde soldier awoke in the morning she was gone.

The mysterious woman returned to her home. Her name was Letitia and she had went into the outside world to find a mate. She wanted a daughter like so many of the Amazons did. Her mother, Natalia, had been a redheaded woman but she had found her mate in Spain. The father's appearance made the daughter's looks so Letitia had been a dark eyed, raven haired beauty. When nine months later in the island's temple of Aphrodite she gave birth, the baby was a blonde haired, blue eye girl. She named her daughter Tania.

Everyone on the island of Amazons had a duty and profession. Letitia was a seer. She and her sisters scanned the omens for a glimpse into the future and aided the Queen in her decisions. By day she and her sisters would study the omens, pray to their Goddesses, and pursue their studies, all in the hopes that they would help guide the Queen on a course of wisdom.

Letitia found the temptation of looking into her baby daughter's future was too much to resist. She sought auguries and omens to give a hint into the little blonde baby's life. What she saw frightened her. Letitia foresaw that her little girl was going to be thrown out into the world of men, forced to battle violent men as her own mother had done on a ship leaving Troy centuries before. It was very confusing, Letitia saw her daughter in some strange costume, in great victories and worse defeats. What she saw last truly frightened her, she saw her daughter about to die at the hand of a man holding a weapon and firing it at her while she lay helpless.

It was unbearable to think of her daughter in that situation and from her experience with omens, Letitia knew that scene could go two ways. Either her daughter would be shot dead and Letitia's one and only daughter would be in the hands of Hades, or she could do something to prevent it.

Letitia watched and waited. She knew there would be an opportunity. Finally, when Tania was about three months old, the island was attacked by some minion of Hades. The attack was no danger, since the Amazons were always prepared, it was meant more to keep the Amazons aware of the evil god below them. That night, knowing the portal to Hades would be open, Letitia took her baby into the caves. She knew exactly where the opening would be and slipped inside. Down into the bowels of the earth she went, fearing every step but knowing her daughter's life was in her hands.

Finally after what seemed an eternity, which is even longer to an immortal Amazon, the raven haired mother heard the rushing of water. She peeked around the corner to see a man standing on a skiff. He wore a dusty, dull gray cloak and leaned on a pole for pushing the skiff across. Across the river was a three headed dog that was already looking directly at her with red, glowing eyes. Letitia knew what needed to be done as had been done ages ago to a man that went down in history as a hero, but to the Amazons he was a villain. His name had been Achilles.

Letitia walked out into the huge cavern that housed the river. The hood of the cloak lifted up and a gnarled hand came forth in a stopping motion. Letitia walked up to the shore of the river anyway, worried that each step would lead her across the river where she would dare not go. From her hand dropped a pair of gold coins onto the skiff. The hood looked down at them for a long moment like he was thinking it over. Finally, the figure knelt down and scooped up the ancient Trojan coins that he had not seen in ages.

The Amazon seer knelt down at the shore of the river. She dared not to touch the water herself or forget all she knew. For her baby, that would hopefully not be much, but for Letitia, her centuries of studies would be gone and her baby in danger here at the gates of Hades. Tania let out a cry as Letitia held the baby girl by her hair and dipped her carefully into the heavy, flowing waters. She left the blonde baby girl submerged for a few seconds then quickly pulled her out and laid the crying baby onto a towel she had brought with her. After drying her baby daughter, she dropped another coin on the skiff, bowed to its owner, and rushed out of the cavern.

Tania never really could connect with her mother. She grew up a willful girl, so unlike the other few girls she grew up with. Amazons aged slowly and Tania went from childhood to womanhood in many more years than girls in the outside world. Time had its own way on the island of the Amazons. Tania never could understand it, but there was something missing. Her mother wanted her to work in the Great Library or study to be a seer as she had been, but that was not for Tania. She loved running through the high grass, leaping across boulders, or diving into the crystal blue waters of her home. She studied her lessons, but being outside and being alone was her greatest joy. It was only natural that when she came of age and had to choose her role in Amazon society, she volunteered for the Scouts. For her mother it was a great disappointment, but for Tania is was a release. She could tell her mother was frightened for her, but she had to live her own life. Tania had to find out just who she was.

For years Tania served in the Scouts. The Scouts were the first line of defense for the Amazons. It was the Scouts that watched over the far reaches of their beautiful island, watching for any signs of outsiders or any assaults by the minions of Hades. For days a Scout would be alone. Wearing only a loose tunic, belt, sandals, tiara, spear and sword, they would wander across the most isolated parts of the island. Many Scouts were the first victims of the monsters that boiled up from Hades. Tania became a prized Scout. No other could outrun her, she always raised an alarm long before any of the devilish beasts could harm the Amazons. She was promoted and given a section of the island's Scouts to command.

Her mother was proud, but still frightened. She was horrified when Tania announced that she was ready to have a daughter of her own. All the visions her mother had foreseen of her beautiful tanned blonde daughter killed by men in the outer world flooded back to her. The Amazons had a vague idea that there was some great war out there, like there seemed to be frequently. Tania was adamant and the Queen would refuse no Amazon the right to face their own fate, whether it be daughter, mortality, or death. Against her mother's wishes, Tania was allowed to leave the island to find a mate.

The Amazons could appear anywhere, passing from the screen of magic that shielded their island, to appear anywhere that bordered water. The Queen knew how confusing the outside world would be to an Amazon sheltered on the island, so anyone leaving would appear also in a quiet place, usually farmland. Letitia had appeared in a cow pastures on the shores of the Rhine over a century before.

Tania appeared off a river in a place called America. Just entering the edges of a small town and seeing hulks of metal on wheels that transported people awed the naive Amazon. Like almost every Amazon before her, she couldn't believe the machines these people had and the buildings they had created.

She was curious and badly wanted to learn more, but she remembered the warnings others had given her. Tania wandered the fields until she found a young man on another machine turning over dirt in a field. Just like her mother before her, Tania talked with the young man. It was her first meeting with a man and it was confusing to her. In school Tania had been told all about the ancient Greeks and how evil some men could be, but this one did not seem evil at all. He was sweet. They ended the night making love under the stars on a blanket in the hay field. It was incredible, an experience she could never forget. 'How could they be evil?' she thought when she saw him dozing on the blanket. Still, she had to go, leaving him to wonder who she had been.

Returning home, Tania in nine months gave birth to her only child and named her Julia. She had auburn hair like the father she could never see, who would be aged or dead by the time she reached maturity.

Tania cared for her daughter but also joined the Scouts again. Once a creature with a poison stinger come up through a cave in the mountains. She was part of the group that fought with it. When the monster's stinger tried to puncture her skin, it caused Tania some pain on impact but it couldn't get past her skin. She did not think much of it, but her mother's foresight had helped even if Tania never knew.

Some years later, as Julia was entering her own womanhood, Tania was scouting the far side of the island. Suddenly she heard a strange explosion overhead. Down from the heavens came something trailing a strange wave of energy. It screamed from the speed it was travelling and when it hit the side of a nearby cliff, the wave of energy knocked Tania back twenty feet and stripped bark and branches off trees. Expecting it to be some new attack by Hades, Tania rushed towards the crater on the beach where the object had finally come to rest. She leaped down into the crater, her spear back and ready to plunge into the breast of the monster when she stopped.

She gasped. It was no monster or beast. It was a man. He had dark messy hair and wore a strange costume that was torn in many places. Across his broad, muscular chest was a torn, stylized letter 'U'. He had the look of one that had lost a fight. Tania was confused, was he evil? Should she kill him now while he was at her mercy? Many a monster of Hades had been in the same situation and Tania or her sisters had not hesitated to plunge a spear or sword into them and end their existence. To her though, he was so handsome. She thought back about the one lover she had been with and looked down at this man. This man was so much more than that farmboy. She kneeled down beside him, feeling the heat of whatever had struck him and brought him down here. It was hard to believe that he could have survived the crash into the cliff. Tania ran her fingers over his chest. She set her spear down and looked him over closely. Her heart raced and her body was tingling with excitement tinged with fear.

'Oh my...' she gasped. Part of the red costume around his hips had torn away, exposing part of him to her. Her blue eyes went wide. Her heart raced faster and other, different parts of her body tingled with excitement. With one finger she cautiously touched him like a person touches a snake that they think might strike at any moment.

She glanced up at his face for some reason to see that, although she could tell his mind was in a dazed fog, he was looking at her. Tania threw herself back and stumbled up the sides of the crater. She snatched up her spear and ran off like the wind. Every part of her was alive but when she had seen him looking at her, the brave Amazon warrior thought her heart was going to explode.

Tania knew little of what happened to him after that. She knew the Queen's daughter had taken over his care and that he was going to be returned to the outside world. The next thing she knew was that the Queen had announced a contest. The winner of the contest would be given the title of Champion and sent into the outside world as the representative of the Amazons, to help those of good against those of evil. The Queen hardly called this person a winner, but to most of the Amazons including Tania, it would be a great adventure. The idea of meeting more men like the man in the crater, a man someone had said was called Ultra Man, was enough to make her tingle all over again.

The contest was both mental and physical. Being a scout that was always active, Tania finished the physical contests in the top five regularly, but she had avoided classes. She never had been a good student, mostly because of her strange relationship with her mother. When the contest was over, she had finished sixteenth. Out of over two hundred, that was very good, but the winner had been the Queen's daughter, Deanna.

Tania knew that Deanna was faster, stronger, a better diplomat, and more beautiful than she was. Deanna was as close to perfect as any Amazon could be. Tania did not go to the great parade in Deanna's honor. She was disappointed in her poor showing and volunteered to be on Scout duty during that proud moment in Amazon history. It shocked her as much as anyone when word returned that Deanna was dead after less than a month in the outside world.

The next choice was Melania as the champion. She did much better, and Tania kept at her duties during the three years Melania was Ultra Woman. When Melania fell, there was shock again, but it was more controlled. The next Amazon to be given the mantle of Ultra Woman was Atalanta. She had been a guard captain that Tania knew, and Tania did not really like her much. It did not surprise Tania to find out that Atalanta had fallen in less than a month. Next the Queen tried someone with intellect, so one of the Amazon librarians named Rei went out as champion. Rei did well, but finally after four years returned to the island, pregnant with some villain's child.

Why the Queen choice her next is a little bit of a mystery to Tania. She had performed very well in a second contest, finishing fifth, but she later found out that her Scout duties that left her alone to her own resources so often made the Queen think she would do well isolated in the outside world.

Putting on the uniform with the tight red bustier with the two golden letters across her breasts was one of the most exciting moments of Tania's life. Pulling up the snug blue panties-tights made her gasp. She was used to nothing covering here there since she wore a loose tunic and skirt while moving around the mountains and beaches of the far side of the island. The boots took a little getting used to, and her mother beamed when Tania pushed back her blonde hair and placed the golden tiara on her forehead.

She was in a daze at the thought of going into the outside world for as long as she wanted, even if it might mean until she died. It was scary but so thrilling at the same time. Some of her sisters gave her looks that made her think she was being sent to her doom, especially after two of the previous four had fallen within a month of going. Tania would be different she promised herself.

Tania actually was different than the other three previous Amazon champions. Deanna had been naive, Melania too tough, Atalanta rude and blustery, Rei could be too weak. Tania was used to being alone, which helped her more than the others that were used to giving commands back on the island to others. She was also thrilled to be out in the crowded city. It took her a few weeks to adjust to this new world and during that time she was in her Ultra Woman persona rarely while she learned about this new place.

Since she has come into this world, Tania has always enjoyed her life as Ultra Woman. She has experienced her share of defeats. Once she fell to a group of men dedicated to killing people who did not match their moral beliefs. Their leader tried to shoot Tania, but the bullet simply bounced off her forehead, then her body. More than once her mother's mission has saved Tania since her skin is now impenetrable. Bullets hurt, but they can never kill her.

She has also experienced many things while in the outside world. At times she seems more of an American girl than Amazon warrior. While afraid to endanger regular people, she has shared herself with more than one hero. Anyone without powers would be put in danger by being too close to her, so as Ultra Woman she has become close with many heroes, including Captain Liberty and even the Ultra Man she first found so long ago.

Now, as the greatest Ultra Woman of them all, she continues to fight for good and justice as she best sees it while enjoying her life in this wonderful, confusing world she finds herself in.
